In most cases, gums which bleed is somewhat common and not a serious issue. Patients may notice a bit of blood following brushing and flossing, as these activities can cause irritation to sensitive gums. One of the most common reason for bleeding gums is due to the buildup of plaque and tartar. These products allow bacteria to grow along the gum. In order to prevent bleeding, it is important for patients to practice good oral hygiene and visit the dentist regularly for an examination and professional cleaning.
The following are common causes for bleeding or sensitive gums:
- Poor oral hygiene or neglect
- Firm toothbrush or using an aggressive brushing technique
- Old, worn out toothbrushes which do not properly clean the teeth
- Incorrect flossing techniques or using too much force
- Certain medications which can include aspirin, blood thinners, and ibuprofen
- Gum disease
Below are various methods which can aid in treating bleeding gums and preventing them from returning.
Gauze
Patients must practice good oral hygiene in order to properly treat their bleeding gums. The bleeding can be stopped by placing damp gauze on the area which is bleeding. Use gentle pressure and press the gauze in place until the bleeding stops. Some patients who may have a weakened immune system or other medical issues may notice their gums take longer to stop bleeding. If the bleeding continues or worsens, follow up with your dentist to determine if there is another underlying issue.
Ice
Use a cool compress, ice pack, or ice cube against bleeding or swollen gums. This can help to sooth the gums and reduce the bleeding. It can be especially helpful to use a small ice pack to soothe swelling from minor mouth injuries. Ice packs or cool compresses can also aid in reducing the pain and swelling associated with gingivitis. Patients should not use an ice for more 10 minutes at a time. Contact a doctor or dentist if the bleeding persists.
Mouthwash
Patients can use an antibacterial mouthwash to help in treating and preventing the gums from bleeding. These types of mouthwashes help to kill bacteria and reduce inflammation. Mouthwash can also help to treat and prevent gingivitis. Gum disease is one of the most common causes of bleeding gums. Some of the most common active ingredients found in mouthwashes are chlorohexidine and hydrogen peroxide. Mouthwash can be purchased over-the-counter at most drug and convenience stores.
Salt Rinse
Using a warm salt water rinse can aid in reducing bacteria and expedite healing. The American Dental Association (ADA) recommends combining ½ of a teaspoon of salt with 8 ounces of warm water to make a salt rinse. Swish the rinse in the mouth for a few seconds and then spit it out. This process can be repeated multiple times a day.
Toothbrush
Patients should use a soft toothbrush as firm and medium toothbrushes can be too abrasive, causing increased gum sensitivity and bleeding. It is recommended that patients brush their teeth for at least two minutes, at least two times each day. Both electric and manual toothbrushes are effective in cleaning the teeth. Toothbrushes and toothbrush heads should be replaced every 3-4 months, or earlier if needed.
