SAME DAY / IMMEDIATE DENTURES
Having missing teeth can both be unappealing and annoying. Having a gap where teeth are missing or not having teeth at all can make biting, chewing and even speaking more difficult. These issues with functionality, along with self-esteem problems that come from missing teeth, can be resolved—with the help of teeth replacements such as dentures.
Do I Need Dentures?
While dentures may not be the right answer for your needs, some sort of teeth replacement is necessary for one or more missing teeth. When teeth are missing, the face can droop, the jawbone can disintegrate and other oral health issues can occur. If you are only missing a few teeth, you may be a candidate for a dental bridge or implants. If you are missing more teeth, though, dentures may be your only teeth replacement option.
Traditional Dentures
The image that comes to most people’s minds when they think of dentures is that of traditional dentures. These dental prosthetics are custom made for each patient, and take into account the specific needs and preferences of the patient. Some patients opt for prosthetics that look very similar to their original teeth, while other patients opt for teeth that look more like what they would have wanted their teeth to look like. Either way, the dentist will have the dentures fabricated for their specific preferences, and to match their jaw and mouth overall.
The Placement Process
The placement process for traditional dentures first involves any extractions that are necessary. The gums are then given time to heal, and the prosthetics are made. Generally it takes a few months before the completed dentures can be placed.
Immediate Dentures
Another option that is available for some patients is immediate dentures. These dentures can be placed as soon as an extraction procedure is completed—meaning a patient can leave the office with a new set of teeth. These dentures can also help with the healing process, as they help to protect the gums.
There are a few negatives to immediate dentures that are important to consider before committing to them. One consideration is the cost, which will be higher than traditional dentures. Another consideration is the fact that immediate dentures will eventually need to be realigned shortly after placement. Even with these disadvantages, many patients choose same day dentures because they allow the patient to leave the office able to bite, chew and smile.
Partial or Full Dentures?
Another consideration when getting dentures is whether you are a candidate for partial or full dentures. If you have enough healthy teeth, your dentist will likely place partial dentures instead of full dentures in order to save as many of your natural teeth as possible. Whether you have partial or immediate dentures placed, you still may be a candidate for immediate dentures. Speak with your cosmetic dentist about teeth replacement options, and whether partial or full dentures are an option. From there, you can discuss whether traditional or immediate dentures are the right choice for you.
