Can Zirconia Crowns crack?
Zirconia Crowns are prized for their biocompatibility and strength, but can they crack? There are some concerns that Zirconia Crowns are “too strong” and can even lead to compensatory damage to other teeth. Certainly crowns can fracture, no matter the material they are comprised of, but the reason why they crack will differ. Certain metals are softer and may bend and meld because of chewing force. Porcelain may chip or crack, whether infused to metal or the front of a tooth. Zirconia will retain its shape under most circumstance in your mouth. If it does crack, it will be for one of three reasons.
What is a Zirconia Crown and Why do I need one?
Zirconia is a metal oxide derived from Zirconium. It is naturally occurring, compatible with human biochemistry, very stong, and has a semi-translucent but tooth-like appearance. You may need a crown, or a Zirconia crown, if you have tooth decay, cracking or chipping. You may also need a bridge if you have multiple tooth decay, or missing teeth. You have several options for materials used in a dental implant, and Zirconia is the strongest one.
If Zirconia is so strong, how would it ever crack?
Zirconia crowns typically crack because of a user or prep error. If the Dentist does not have enough time, or the right tools or quality of Zirconia, it can be a more comprisable crown. The state of the tooth itself will affect this also, particularly if there is a deep, sharp crack which the Zirconia must be bonded to. The capability of Zirconia, or any dental implant material, will also be affected by the thickness of the material used. Zirconia has a very high crown fracture strength at 1.5mm+, but if it has to be thinner or layered with less durable materials for your particular crown, it may become slightly less durable. Trust your Dentist to consult with the literature of your tooth decay and the materials used to find the best fit for your implant. Cracks could also be a result of poor material handling at labs or production facilities.
If my Zirconia crown cracks, am I in danger?
Because of the tetragonal crystalline properties, Zirconia is incredibly durable. You would not want to swallow a large chunk, but it would be like swallowing a rock. You would not face any dire consequences of leeching, exposure, chemical interactions, or any general reactions-perhaps a tummy ache if the piece was large and rough shaped. You can rest easy knowing that a Zirconia crown will remain durable, last a long time, and be completely safe with your natural biochemistry.
A well handled, shaped, fitted, and bonded piece of Zirconia could last upwards of 20 years. Care for your mouth and proper hygiene are th big priorities here. If you have a Zirconia crown, and it somehow cracks, you can point to three different reasons.
- It was prepped incorrectly
- It was handled incorrectly at manufacture
- It was simply too thin
You will know where you stand with Zirconia, you will be informed and hopefully able to rectify the situation promptly and with little cost. You will also be able to sleep soundly knowing that Zirconia is Biocompatible and completely unreactive with your biology.
