BEACHES IN MOBILE, AL

The Gulf Coast is known throughout the country and the world for its pristine beaches and vacation atmosphere. Mobile Bay is no different. There are numerous beaches in the vicinity that are all worth a visit. Here is a list of a few of the highlights.

Dauphin Island

The most well known beach in the area is without a doubt Dauphin Island. This barrier island is 40 minutes south of the city itself and is located 3 miles off of the mainland. The beach island is easy to get to because of a bridge that connects it to the mainland. The beach is full of condos and vacation rentals. There are numerous activities to do on the island including, crabbing, surfing, fishing, shelling, paddle boarding, kayaking, and of course swimming. The island is also home to the Estaurium at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab. The Estaurium is an aquarium that is home to species native to the bay. If you get tired of the sun, it is a great place to go.

Gulf Shores and Orange Beach

Gulf Shores and Orange Beach are the two most visited beaches in the entire state of Alabama. Both communities are well-developed resort towns. They are only an hour away from Mobile and definitely worth the drive for beach lovers. Each of these towns is known for their resort hotels and vacation beachfront rentals. The beaches are great for all of the beach activities that the Gulf is known for including, parasailing, jet skis, shelling, beach combing, dolphin viewing, and swimming.

Point Clear

Point Clear is the closest beach to the city itself. It is a manmade beach on the bay instead of the gulf. This has a few unique advantages. For one, the waves are not nearly as active so swimming and water activities are more relaxing than those on the gulf coast. The beach is white sand just the same as the gulf beaches. It also has a hut for beach gear rentals. Visitors can rent watercraft at this hut as well. Point Clear is also known for The Grand Hotel. This hotel has been a major rental location since the 19 th century. If you are looking to stay in a hotel that is rich in American history, this is definitely the place to check out. The beach is across the bay from the city center and is easily accessible from the city.

Fort Morgan Peninsula

For Morgan is on the farthest westward end of the peninsula including Gulf Shores and Orange Beach just south of Mobile. It is a short ferry ride away from Dauphin Island. It gets its name from the Fort located at the far western end. This beach is not nearly as developed as its beach neighbors, Gulf Shores and Orange Beach. Fort Morgan is better known for this undeveloped ruggedness. The beaches are full of trails that are all worth exploring. It is also known for the Bon Secur National Wildlife Refuge there. Along the beach there are several bed and breakfasts as well a big resort, the Beach Club.
