What is the Porcelain Veneer Procedure?

The right tooth repair option can mean the difference between a strong bite and full smile and a compromised bite and faulty restoration. For tooth damage that is moderate in nature, but not severe enough for a full coverage dental crown to be placed, porcelain veneers may be an excellent option.

What Are Dental Veneers?

A dental veneer is a tooth repair option that allows the patient to continue to bite, chew and smile much like they used to before their tooth was damaged. These dental restorations can be very affordable, and will help to save the patient a lot of money on oral care in the long run. A dental veneer is also very often necessary to maintain the health of the rest of a natural tooth.

Popular Veneer Options

There are a few different options for dental veneers, but two of the most popular are composite and porcelain veneers. Porcelain veneers are much more durable, and will often last a lot longer than composite veneers.

If the difference in cost is an issue, composite veneers may be the right choice—as they are often more affordable in the short-term. Still, a patient may want to consider porcelain to avoid having their dental veneers replaced often down the road.

Veneer Placement Procedure

The process of having a porcelain veneer placed is a pretty simple one, and starts with a visit to the dentist when a tooth has been damaged or otherwise compromised. If your tooth is decayed or damaged, it’s important to visit your dentist as soon as possible to avoid further damage. From there, your dentist will decide on the right course of action. Once they decide a veneer is the right course of action for your situation, they will begin reshaping the tooth. This will begin with removal of the decayed area or adjusting the area of fracture. Once the tooth has been properly reshaped, the dentist will make a mold of the tooth. The dentist will send the mold—along with information other information acquired chairside—to a lab to have the veneer created. Once the restoration is fabricated, it will be sent back to the dentist, who will place the veneer.

Your dentist will first check to make sure the veneer fits properly, and matches the shade of the natural tooth. They will then place the veneer with a bonding agent.

The Right Replacement Option for You

As soon as you notice damage to your tooth, set an appointment with your dentist. From there, they will determine whether or not porcelain dental veneers are the best replacement option for your needs.
